“I was already thinking during the meeting that it seems a lot of the mongols still think that Tolui is more suitable to be Khan as he embodies their way of living way more than his brother. And that in itself would be a source of conflict. And Sitara thinks to be the same. However, the dangerous aspect is that you can’t just leave it like that because in that case, Tolui just becomes the new Khan.”

そんなことをすれば、今度はトルイが新しいカアンになってしまう。

モゲと話している途中でシタラの表情が「この女、単純だな。演技で切り抜けられるぞ！」みたいに変わったところ、声を出して笑った。

演技が大げさすぎる。

“As someone who likes the history of the Mongols, I like how this “slice of life” episode lampshaded some important points about the empire:
* That their nomadic lifestyle was important for them. From the point of view of modern society, something like a building a permanent settlement to serve as the capital feels like common sense, but for the Mongols of the time it was preposterous.
* That military power wasn’t centralized. To be fair, this was the rule almost everywhere: the ruler was first among equals, and it could well be that a subordinate’s personal army was larger than the king’s.
* That the empire wasn’t (just) about destruction and looting. Keeping trade flowing and merchant routes secure was one of their main policy goals.
* That women had an important role in Mongol politics. Indeed, royal spouses would be present in important meetings and have their own holdings and retinues.”
モンゴルの歴史が好きな人間として、この「日常回」が帝国についての重要なポイントをさりげなく描いていたのが好きだ。
まず、彼らにとって遊牧生活が重要だったこと。
現代社会の感覚では、首都として恒久的な都市を建設するなんて当たり前に思えるけど、当時のモンゴル人にはとんでもない発想だった。
次に、軍事力が中央集権化されていなかったこと。
公平に言えば、これは当時の多くの地域でも普通だった。
支配者は「同輩の中の第一人者」であり、配下の個人的な軍勢が王の軍勢より大きいことだってあり得た。
そして、帝国は破壊と略奪「だけ」で成り立っていたわけではないこと。
交易を維持し、商人の通る道を安全に保つことも主要な政策目標の一つだった。
さらに、女性がモンゴル政治で重要な役割を担っていたこと。
実際、王族の妻たちは重要な会議に出席し、自分自身の領地や従者も持っていた。

“Before anyone starts feeling too sorry about the Jin, I want to point out that Kaifeng actually used to be the capital of the Song, back when they ruled all of the Chinese core (this period is usually referred to as Northern Song). The Jin, ancestors to the modern Manchu people, overthrew another northern dynasty, the Liao, and then conquered their way to Kaifeng, and starved and besieged the city. Thus pushing the Song out of Northern China. Just as the Jin did to the Song, the Mongols are about to do to them.”

“Something I really liked is how they depicted the nascent Pax Mongolica. The Mongols were terrible during their conquest and decades if not centuries of progress were lost in some areas. But at the same time, by uniting the steppe and preventing other tribes from raiding they brought a level of prosperity in the Silk Road perhaps not seen since the times Rome and the Han Empire were at their peak.”
すごく良かったのは、成立しつつある※パクス・モンゴリカを描いていたところだ。

“They talk about Tolui becoming too strong from this plan but I also took away that the way he presented the plan just seemed like he was disrespecting The Great Kha’an. He just presented it, ordered what everyone did by himself in front of all the other leaders as if he was the one in charge. To me that negates the public apology at the start of the episode by another of the brothers that was done to establish who is the one in charge.”
この作戦でトルイが強くなりすぎることが語られているけど、俺は彼の作戦の提示の仕方そのものが、大カアンに対して無礼にも見えた。
他の指導者たち全員の前で、自分が責任者であるかのように作戦を提示して、みんなの役割まで自分で決めてしまった。
俺には、それがエピソード冒頭で兄弟の一人が公に謝罪し、誰が最高権力者なのかを示した意味を打ち消しているように思える。

“The Great Kha’an is being portrayed as a smart and kind leader (for mongol warlord standards) who is more interested in stability, peace and the best for his brothers but his inability to not call out when one of his brothers steps out of line may be his downfall. He is the boss, he was chosen as the leader and he needs to remind everyone of that when someoje like Tolui steps out of line because if not the other brothers will know they can also step out of line and impose their will over the kingdom and he will lose control of the empire.”
大カアンは、モンゴルの武将として考えれば、賢くて優しい指導者として描かれている。
安定や平和、そして兄弟にとって何が最善かを重視している。
でも兄弟の誰かが一線を越えたときに、それをきちんと咎められないことが彼の命取りになるかもしれない。
彼が最高権力者なんだ。
指導者として選ばれた以上、トルイのような人物が一線を越えたときには、その事実を全員に思い出させる必要がある。
そうしなければ他の兄弟たちも、自分たちも勝手に振る舞い、帝国に意思を押し付けていいのだと考えるようになり、彼は帝国を制御できなくなる。

“The brothers were really tight in their support for Ogedei. Chagatai with the theatrics to demonstrate Ogedei’s magnanimity to the people and Tolui’s plan at the korultai. No signs of hidden resentment or power struggle from the brothers themselves. Which made Fatima’s plan to plant the seed of discord even more devious. It’s an utterly cunning plan that could succeed even if the brothers themselves had no intention of overthrowing Ogedei. It’s however easier said than done. Wonder how she’d plan to pull it off, and how Toregene would play a role in it. Moge (along with the rest of the Mongols) never would’ve imagined a seemingly inept slave who kept ” getting lost ” had secretly plotted for their downfall.”

“Not sure I’d word it that way. Already in the kurultai we’re seeing seeds of future friction being planted. Ogedei has lofty dreams for the empire, based on peace and prosperity. This gives Chagatai second-hand embarrassment, and puzzles other members of the family. Tolui is openly supportive, but cares more about war. And while his plans make sense and are ruthlessly efficient, they involve sidelining Chagatai and giving inferior scraps to the sons of Jochi. As both Sitara and Boraqchin point out, even if Tolui is genuine and just wants the best for the empire, he’s already stepping on other people’s toes and it’s a matter of time they start fearing his power and suspecting his intentions.”
俺ならそこまで単純には言わないかな。
すでにクリルタイの時点で、将来の摩擦の種が植えられている。
オゴタイは平和と繁栄を基盤とした、帝国への壮大な夢を持っている。
それを見てチャガタイはこっちが恥ずかしくなるような反応をしているし、他の一族も困惑している。
トルイは公然と支持しているけど、彼自身がより重視しているのは戦争だ。
そして彼の作戦は理にかなっていて容赦なく効率的ではあるものの、チャガタイを脇に追いやり、ジュチの息子たちには劣った取り分しか与えないものになっている。
シタラとボラクチンの二人が指摘しているように、たとえトルイに裏心がなく、純粋に帝国にとって最善のことを望んでいるだけだとしても、すでに他人の領域を踏みつけ始めている。
周囲が彼の力を恐れ、その意図を疑い始めるのは時間の問題だ。

“I love that despite Tolui being portrayed as an airhead, he actually has a very good mind for war and can read the room. He stepped in to support Ogedei to stop him from embarrassing himself about his idea. He was the most experienced at warfare out of all the brothers and was Genghis’ most trusted general.”
トルイがちょっと天然っぽく描かれているのに、実際には戦争に関して非常に優れた頭脳を持ち、場の空気まで読めるのが好きだ。
オゴタイが自分の考えを話して恥をかきそうになったところで、すぐに助け舟を出して支持した。
兄弟の中でも戦争経験が最も豊富で、チンギス・カンから最も信頼された将軍だったんだ。

“This show does a good job not just portraying moral nuance of various characters but also that there are different kinds of intelligence. Ogedei, Sitara, and Sorgaghtani are more conventionally smart characters while Tolui, despite not having an interest in booksmarts, is great at warfare and reading a room.”
この作品は、それぞれのキャラクターの道徳的な複雑さだけじゃなく、「知性にもいろいろな種類がある」ということを上手く描いている。

I think that the more stylized character design really paints the serious subject matter in stark contrast such that it hits harder à la Studio Ghibli’s style and themes tbh. I really hope the reception of this show inspires more quality studios to adapt works from its Shojo magazine Mystery Bonita as there are so many bangers from there!!!!”

デフォルメされたキャラクターデザインとシリアスな題材の強烈なコントラストによって、むしろ内容がさらに重く響いてくると思う。
正直、スタジオジブリの作風やテーマにも通じるものを感じる。
この作品の評判をきっかけに、『ミステリーボニータ』の作品をもっと実力のあるスタジオがアニメ化してくれたら嬉しい。
あそこには傑作がたくさんあるんだ!!!!

Too often, women in such settings are either halpless victims or icnredibly empowered according to modern tastes. Historical women might have been subordinate to men, but that didn’t mean they lacked agency, goals or plans even within the limits society had for them. This is something The Apothecary’s Diaries understood well. And that one was fantasy!”
これはもっと多くの歴史作品や歴史風フィクションに意識してほしい部分だ。
こういう舞台の女性は、無力な被害者として描かれるか、現代的な感覚に合わせてものすごく強い女性として描かれることが多すぎる。
歴史上の女性たちは男性に従属する立場だったかもしれない。
でも、社会から課された制約の中でも、自分の意思や目的、計画を持っていなかったわけじゃない。
『薬屋のひとりごと』もそこをよく理解していた。
あっちはファンタジーなのに！

“Fatima explaining to Toregene how and where to sow the seeds of divide within the Mongol empire juxtaposed with Boraqchin’s urging Moge to counteract and oppose any insurgency was ✋absolute cinema🤚”
ファーティマがドレゲネに、モンゴル帝国内のどこにどうやって分裂の種を撒くか説明する場面と、ボラクチンがモゲに反乱の芽を抑え込むよう促す場面の対比。
これはもう✋完全に映画🤚

海外の反応、いかがでしたか？
今回はオゴタイ、トルイ、チャガタイら兄弟の関係と、それを利用しようとするシタラの策略に注目が集まっていました。
特に興味深いのは、兄弟たち自身が露骨に争っているわけではないにもかかわらず、軍事力、権威、価値観の違いそのものが不和の種になり得ると多くの海外ファンが感じていたことです。

この海外コメントがそのまま指摘している「知識こそ力」というテーマから連想される思想家が、イングランドの哲学者フランシス・ベーコンです。
ベーコンは知識と人間の力を強く結びつけ、自然について正しく知ることが、人間が世界に働きかける力につながると考えました。
『天幕のジャードゥーガル』におけるシタラは、圧倒的な軍隊も領地も持っていません。
モンゴル帝国の王族たちと比較すれば、物理的な力では到底対抗できない立場です。
しかし彼女には、学ぶことで身につけてきた知識と、人間を観察して情報を読み取る能力があります。
今回もシタラが注目したのは、オゴタイとトルイの単純な兵力差だけではありません。
誰が権威を持ち、誰が軍事力を持ち、周囲の人々がそれをどう受け止めているのかという「関係」を読み取っています。
つまり彼女にとって知識とは、世界を説明するためだけのものではありません。
自分よりはるかに強大な者たちの行動に影響を与えるための力でもあるのです。
剣を持たない者でも、世界の仕組みを理解すれば巨大な権力を動かせるかもしれない。
その一方で、その知識を復讐のために用いるシタラの姿は、「知識という力を何のために使うのか」という別の問いも私たちに突きつけています。

まとめと感想

『天幕のジャードゥーガル』第7幕「兄弟」は、派手な戦闘以上に「人間関係そのものが戦場になる」という怖さが印象的な回でした。
海外の反応でも、オゴタイとトルイの間に存在する権威と軍事力のねじれや、トルイ本人に野心がなくても周囲から疑われる可能性について多くの考察が寄せられていました。
そして、その小さな亀裂を見逃さなかったのがシタラです。
モンゴル帝国を外から武力で倒すのではなく、内部に不信を生み出して崩していこうとする彼女の発想には、これまで学び続けてきたシタラだからこその恐ろしさがあります。
一方でボラクチンとモゲは、まるでその動きを察知するかのように帝国内部の団結を守ろうとしており、シタラとドレゲネに対する新たな対抗軸も見えてきました。
また海外ファンからは、遊牧生活、分散した軍事力、交易路、女性の政治参加など、モンゴル帝国の社会そのものを描いた点にも高い関心が寄せられています。
「知識こそ力」というシタラの戦い方が、巨大なモンゴル帝国をこれからどのように揺さぶっていくのか注目です。
